Maria Obezo is an Afro-Colombian lawyer from Cartagena specializing in public law and passionate about the defense and protection of the human rights of people of African descent, especially those in vulnerable, excluded, and marginalized communities. Maria is also a proud daughter of San Basilio de Palenque, the first free African town in the Americas founded by descendants of the enslaved Africans who, through acts of resistance and freedom, took refuge in the territories of the North Coast of Colombia in the 16th century. Maria has developed expertise in human rights advocacy working with local organizations aiming to achieve inclusion and equality. Maria her Master of Laws (LLM) focused on International human rights law and economic development from the NYU School of Law.
